What drama was happening behind the scenes?

According to Rolling Stone, The Idol’s production went “wildly and disgustingly off the rails,” as reported by 13 people, including staff members and show insiders. One source called the experience a “shitshow” because of the frequent delays, reshoots, budget limitations, and last-minute script revisions.

Furthermore, once Levinson took over as director in lieu of Seimetz, the show took a worrisome turn with more explicit material and nudity. “It was like a toxic man’s rape fantasy in the show,” one member of the production crew explained, “and then the woman returns for more because it makes her music better.”

Despite these allegations, Depp backed Levinson, calling him the “best director” she’s ever worked with. She also stated that she has never felt more supported or respected in a creative environment, with her input and opinions being highly valued.

While Levinson and Tesfaye declined to comment on the Rolling Stone report, Tesfaye later responded on social media with a sarcastic remark, “Did we upset you, Rolling Stone?”
